Hey pals! How’re we all doing on this fine Bank Holiday weekend?
It’s been such a nice, happy coincidence that Connie the dog (the littlest Bagshaw pup) came to stay with us for a few days, at the same time this leather, Scottie dog charmed beauty made its way into my life, thanks to the lovely guys at Radley! Perfect timing.
I feel like I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect backpack my whole life. The struggle to get the balance right between the pretty and the practical is too real, but while a few previous styles have come and gone (banished to the back of the wardrobe), I think the newest addition, the Coopers Row Large Flapover Backpack, may just be the one!
So, while I’m sat here, soaking in some much-needed Vitamin D with a teeny, sleepy pup sittin’ pretty at my side, I thought I’d share a few snaps from one of our weekend walks with some words about why my new bag is ticking all the right boxes!
SPACE, BUT NOT TOO MUCH SPACE
The numero uno requirement for a good bag in my books. While most backpacks tend to be huge, cumbersome things (which will only mean aching shoulders, lugging around way more than I ever need), this one is the just the right size.
Slightly smaller than an average Morkie, but spacious enough to fit a tablet for working on the go, as well as a bunch of other essentials, I need everyday, including:
my phone, my purse, my Olympus PEN + lens, sunglasses, two moleskine journals (one week-view diary to organise my entire life, one plain page notebook for note-taking, doodling and ideas-making), a lipstick for a mid-day top up, sunglasses, hand cream and a small box of hair grips.
What’s more, there’s even room to spare for the gazillion of receipts / trains tickets / car park receipts / empty gum wrappers that will inevitably accumulate over the weeks. Cue the knowing smirk emoji.
I’m not going to lie: compartments in bags give me as much joy as pockets in dresses. It’s all about being smarter on the go, time saving and easily knowing where to find something when you need it. Have you ever experienced the fear of standing at a checkout with a big old queue getting increasingly more impatient at you, as you struggle to find your purse in an over-filled bag? Have you ever had to empty the contents of the bag out on the floor to find it? Yup, me too.
The memory alone was the main reason I was pleased to find not one, not two, but a whopping five different compartments in addition to the main ‘bag’ part. Lifting the front flap, you’ll find
a hidden front pocket, held together with a magnetic clasp, which is super handy for purses and anything else you may need to get to in a hurry. While the zipped back pocket is ideal for documents, like passports, that you want to keep extra safe.
This goes without saying for a backpack I know, but solid, sturdy adjuster straps is such a god send. If I’m out and about at work, I usually take a camera to get content as we go, so I want to be able to snap away without the hassle of extra luggage getting in the way. At the weekends, it means that you’re free to pick up cute dogs for hugs or Lion King style lifts… it’s an all-round win.
ILLUSION OF PUT TOGETHER-EDNESS
Y’all know me. I’m not one for anything overly sophisticated, but at the same time, I feel like it’s high time that I stop relying on a freebie festival tote to lug around my essentials.
A bag that still fits with style, I wanted something that was beautiful to look at but was also smart and structured and offered an element of poise.
While, we’re at it, just because we’re looking for practicality here, it doesn’t mean that a backpack should be crafted in the type of rugged, mountaineering fabric that Bear Gryllis would dream about at night. Nor does it need to be shapeless and hang scruffily like a sack of potatoes. Amiright!?
Just a nice, classic-looking soft grain leather in a rounded satchel shape, that will only get better with age will do me nicely!
So there you have it, if you can’t already tell, I’m over the moon with new little baby, so expect to see it in lots of other outfit posts.
Hope you all enjoy the rest of your long weekend and thanks again as always for reading!
